Parish Nurse Ministry

The Parish Nurse Healthcare Outreach is a holistic approach to healthcare, taking into account the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of individuals.
  The Parish Nurse:

  • provides health education & counseling,
  • assists elderly in their homes with nursing needs,
  • provides health screenings and influenza vaccinations,
  • advocates for health services,
  • provides free blood pressure screenings,
  • provides accompaniment to doctor appointments,
  • Support Groups
  • help with crime victim compensation forms
  • educates the community regarding management of chronic diseases, men's and women's health issues, immunization schedules, and proper nutrition

Parish Nurse Community Outreach started in 1999 in response to neighborhood needs for healthcare support and education.  Many elderly live alone with no family in the area. Others encounter barriers to good health care due to their economic status or status as immigrants and refugees.

Isolated elderly and those from immigrant groups often are unaware of available health and social services, and unaware of their eligibility for public benefits to improve their well being.  The Community Nurse helps to fill the gap by ensuring adequate access to health care and social services, good health education and screening services for the growing elderly, economically disadvantaged, and multi-ethnic communities in Eastern Delaware County and West Philadelphia.

Contact Penny at 610-352-7008 for personal assistance or for information on community health programs that she coordinates.

The PRAYER SHAWL Ministry continues to look for people to knit shawls that can be given to those in need of comfort. The Prayer Shawl Ministry provides handmade shawls to persons in need of prayer and support.

Each shawl is made with prayer and then blessed before it is given to the recipient. Any one may request a Prayer Shawl on behalf of someone else. A shawl is a concrete way you can wrap someone in a prayer and let them know god cares for them. Recipients have felt the prayer blessing from miles away.

If you would like to learn how to make a prayer shawl, please contact Penny Bouma, Parich Nurse, at 610-352-7008. Knitters (or crocheters) have found a spiritual experience in making each shawl. To spend time in prayer with busy hands has been a blessing.
